At the heart of the Super League proposal was the intent to cement broadcasting proceeds each year and solidify the 12 clubs’ position at the top of European football.

A year on from the announcement, and with a relaunch looming once again, we have looked at the founding clubs’ 2020/21 accounts.

The perspective: The founding clubs announced their plans to “save football” mid-April last year, in a year when the clubs accumulated operating losses of €1.8 million. How can football be financially sustainable?

A year on from one of the most subversive days in contemporary footballing history, three of the founding Super League clubs - Juventus, Barcelona, and Real Madrid - are still hanging onto the dream of a new European tournament. 

LaLiga President Javier Tebas recently warned that a relaunch of the Super League was looming, this time allegedly without the ‘Big Six’ from the Premier League, and with other tweaks to the ridiculed and rushed solution from a year ago.
