European football’s day of destiny: Court kills Super League, censures UEFA, opens door for new competitions

The European Court of Justice (CJEU) has ruled against the possibility of a closed European Super League, but also censured UEFA for its “unlawful” practices in managing football.

Super League backers immediately put forward new competition proposal, which fans leader describes as “just the repackaging of a terrible idea.”

Why it matters: The judgement opens the possibility for new entities to organise international club competitions, with an emphasis on “sporting merit” being central to any new venture.

The perspective: UEFA says that it has already got its house in order and its lawyer describes it as an “emphatic” win. But leading governance expert warns against “underestimating” the amount of work it needs to do.
