Expected vs actual points: Europe’s biggest overachievers and underperformers in 2025/26

IMAGO

IMAGO | Bournemouth and Chelsea sit at opposite ends of the Premier League’s financial efficiency rankings for 2025/26.

The Recap

Off The Pitch’s end-of-season efficiency rankings compare actual points totals with expected performance across Europe’s top five leagues and the Championship, based on clubs’ financial profiles.

Data Insight

Coventry produced the strongest result in the dataset, collecting 95 points against an expected total of 55.77. An overperformance of 39.23 points.

Why It Matters

In an era of growing financial scrutiny, the rankings provide insight into which clubs are outperforming their economic weight, and which are failing to convert investment into results.

The Perspective

The findings underline that financial strength alone does not guarantee success, with some of Europe’s highest-spending clubs significantly underperforming expectations while lower-budget clubs delivering more than their resources would suggest.
