Promotion beckons for Danish club despite failed US ownership: “We were facing a turnaround in almost all areas of the business”

Soenderjyske, formerly under disappointing ownership by Robert Platek for nearly two years, are now undergoing a challenging turnaround. Initially, the focus has been on stemming the financial losses.

"Our goal is to become a significant cultural institution in this region of Denmark. To achieve this, we had to implement several changes following the change in ownership," says the new local co-owner and chairman.

Why it matters: How do you rebuild a club after a failed US ownership that had limited understanding of local culture and nearly led to bankruptcy?

The perspective: According to Soenderjyske's chairman, who has a global career in the World Bank Group and the Foreign Ministry of Denmark, a turnaround cannot be rushed. However, time provides the opportunity to establish something sustainable.

"I don't usually use this kind of language, but it's fair to describe it as a financial crisis, or 'financial bleeding' as you say. We had to put a stop to it as quickly as possible, even though it required a significant infusion of liquidity. Without drastically reducing costs, we couldn't move forward. So, it was a necessary step," states chairman and co-owner Søren Davidsen firmly, reflecting on the situation the new ownership encountered during the due diligence process
