The state of European football's economy in 2023/24: Growth continues, but profitability remains elusive

Income in European club football continues to grow, but structural challenges remain. Many clubs still rely on a business model where profitability depends heavily on player sales.

Since 2019/20, the Compound Annual Growth Rate for turnover stands at a strong 8.9 per cent.

Why it matters: The 2023/24 season brought financial improvements in several areas, but overall profitability in European club football remains well below pre-pandemic lev-els.

The perspective: If current levels of financial losses persist, we may see the introduc-tion of tighter domestic cost-control measures in the years ahead.

The days when football clubs were staring into an abyss of uncertainty as the Covid-19 pandemic raged may now feel like a distant memory.

However, the 2023/24 season is only the second campaign entirely unaffected by the pandemic. With 201 of the 245 European clubs in Off The Pitch’s financial database having published their accounts, we have assessed the financial health of European football.
